Ice flows down the river most days now, so steelhead fishing is erraticuntil spring. Our snowpack at this point is below average, after being lowthrough the fall. Early snowfall is important to river flows the followingsummer. The fall snow seems to pack down, freeze hard, and last better. Latewinter snow may bring the snowpack average up, but it doesn't seem to last--atleast, that's my notion formed over the last 35 years. The lower flow meansthat June Middle Fork dates will be more viable, less likely to have water toohigh, while we would begin flying late-summer trips into Indian Creek earlier. On the Main Salmon, of course, low water is not an issue.
Last winter was moderate, with somewhat below normal snow pack--offset by avery wet June, so that we had decent river levels through the summer. Our highwater was a long, even, moderate peak--no high, flushing, spikes. The blowoutsof 08 in the upper river remained, but were not a big problem. There was arumor of a storm in that area in the early fall that put more material in theriver in both spots, but I haven't been there to see. The blowout in Tappan IIIthat occurred in the same storm changed a lot in high water, still a dramaticrapid but not the risk of 08.

Everyone is still talking about it with joy and delight. Our family will hold the experience in our hearts and mind's eye forever. There was a spiritual quality to the adventure as well as all the fun, which reinforced the affection between family members.

Bill and Stephanie,
Planning a Trip | What to Bring
Whitewater Rafting on Idaho's Salmon River
Whitewater rafting in Idaho is a premium river experience. The Main Salmon River, the River of No Return, offers excellent Idaho white water rafting. You'll also enjoy placid pools, magnificent mountain scenery and beautiful sand beaches. Most of the river gorge is timbered, reaching 5000 feet or more to the ridges above. Elevation is moderate, beginning at 3000 feet, so summer temperatures are warm. We float 80 miles in six days.
Idaho river tours: What to bring and wear
Equipment needed on Idaho river tours will depend on duration of the trip and time of the year. Most Idaho river outfitters provide all but personal items. On our summer day floats, which have trivial white water, you would need very little-- sandals or sneakers that can get wet, swim suit, and tee-shirt, maybe a light jacket preferably of polar fleece, maybe a rainsuit if weather is threatening. Like most Idaho river outfitters, we provide life jackets.
In colder water or heavier rapids, a wet suit or helmet may be needed. We provide and require use of helmets in paddle boats. Wetsuits sometimes are needed in high, cold water, especially for people in paddle boats. We do not include them, but they can be rented at the beginning of the trip from the River Wear store. Multi-day Idaho river tours will require sleeping bags and additional clothing. Like most Idaho river outfitters who run overnight trips, Aggipah provides tents. We also provide sleeping pads, waterproof duffle bags for your gear, and day bags and boxes for cameras, sun tan lotion, sun glasses, etc. Most people bring their own sleeping bags, but we do have rental bags available. We bring folding dining tables and chairs.
Plan Your White Water Rafting or Fishing Trip
Idaho white water rafting trips on our favorite stretches of the Salmon and Middlefork rivers include day, or half-day and extended, multi-day excursions. Because of access limitations in the river canyons of Idaho, rafting trips lasting only a day or two frequently are near roads, while multi-day journeys usually are in back-country or wilderness areas.
Specialty River Trips
Every once in awhile we have an unique opportunity to offer our customers. We enjoy putting together speciality trips for our customers, and creating that "Once in a Lifetime" adventure.

We are offering a special trip this year for alumni of Central Missouri State University, with a small discount, on the Main Salmon on 30 July. Peg and I graduated from there, hope to see some old acquaintences. Call for additional details, or contact the alumni office.
